Claiming that the BSP is the only party capable of stopping communalism, Bareilly-based cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan Friday announced his support for the party in the Lok Sabha polls.

Khan said he has decided to support the BSP after consulting his supporters. The cleric, who has considerable influence among the Barelvi sect of Muslims in Bareilly region, said: “I had got a survey conducted in Uttar Pradesh.

The survey found that the BSP is the only party which is in the fight in the state and it is also capable of stopping communalism. After considering the survey report I decided to offer my unconditional support to the BSP.”

Khan said he has decided to support the BSP without any condition and without meeting any leader of the party. However, BSP sources said the party’s candidate from Bareilly, Umesh Gautam, is close to the cleric and this is also a reason behind him backing the party.

Last year, Khan had resigned from the post of adviser in UP state handloom corporation, a post with the rank of minister of state, accusing the Akhilesh Yadav government of not being able to effectively deal with the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar.

Khan had since got in contact with the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress but talks did not materialise. He had also tried to float a political outfit, Hindustan United Movement(HUM), with the support of local seer Acharya Pramod Krishnam, but the latter joined the Congress and became its candidate from Sambhal Lok Sabha seat.
