Modi meet cancelled due to Rahul rally success: Cong

The Congress on Monday capitalised on the confusion caused by the last-minute cancellation of Narendra’s Modi rally in the capital, claiming that it was a direct result of the success of Rahul Gandhi’s “historic rally”on Sunday.

The Congress further demanded an investigation into the “illegal money” collected by the BJP for their election campaign.

The party had been left red-faced after a Rahul rally held at the same venue prior to the Delhi Assembly elections had failed to draw the crowds.

However, boosted by the success of Sunday’s rally, the Congress took on the BJP a day later.

“After Rahul Gandhi’s rally, the BJP cancelled Narendra Modi’s rally at Ramlila Maidan because they realised that people wouldn’t turn up,” Congress Legislative Party leader Haroon Yusuf said.

Congress leaders said Rahul Gandhi’s successful rally at Ambedkar Nagar demonstrated the manner in which the party had regained their traditional vote banks — especially among those who live in Dalit settlements, Muslim pockets, slums and unauthorised colonies.

This, party leaders said, had prompted the BJP to cancel Modi’s rally in Delhi.

Yusuf went on to say that despite the cancellation, the BJP’s insistence on the use of 3D holographic technology for campaigning was suspicious.

“Each screen costs around Rs 15 lakh. They are talking about installing 15 such screens in Delhi. The BJP needs to give an account about this expense to the people of Delhi,” he said.

With the help of this technology, Modi was scheduled to hold public rallies simultaneosuly at 100 venues across the country on April 6. Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel had said the party was looking to use this technology in Delhi in lieu of the rally, as it would allow the party to reach out to a larger audience.

Demanding an investigation into the source of BJP’s funding, Yusuf alleged this money had been collected from corrupt sources.

“The BJP has been spending crores of rupees from money that has been gathered through corrupt means,” he alleged.
